UIC ACM

Association of Computing Machinery

Week 13

November 16, 2009 — Sean Deitz (Views: 24)

No ACM General Meeting this week.

All meetings are at 5:30 pm, in SEL 2262, unless otherwise specified.
SIG-Code meets on Monday to continue their study of Perl.  We’re reaching the end of the tutorials, so if anyone has project suggestions, or somewhere to go from there, that’d be cool.
Flourish Planning meeting occurring on Tuesday.  Help search for sponsors and speakers.
SIG-Game meeting on Wednesday.  Help us get together a playable game before the semester runs out.
SIG-Fun movie night will continue on Friday at 6:00.  We may continue with favorites from last time, or we might cook up something new.

Also, be aware of the SIGs starting up next semester.  SIG-Droid will be working off of the Android platform, so whether you’re interested in tooling around with the SDK or seriously producing some phone apps, be sure to check it out.
SIG-Build is our hardware-aware comrades’ attempt to make use of the older machines in the office, and to make people aware of the inner workings of Computing Machinery.  Building a computer out of whatever parts are available to them, it is their task to bridge the gap between software enthusiasts and those with technical knowledge about the components of a system.  This is knowledge you won’t want to miss out on, so definitely reserve some time for their meetings and tutorials.

~Get things done now, as time runs short before you know it, ACM President, Sean Deitz

Week 12

November 9, 2009 — Sean Deitz (Views: 41)

SIG-Code meets as usual, on Monday at 5:30 pm to continue learning Perl. Sean will not be there on account of an Engineering Council meeting, so someone else take the lead, preferably one of those who demonstrated some proficiency with the language.
The Flourish planning committee is meeting this Tuesday at 5:30 pm. Get involved in our spectacular Open Source conference!
SIG-Game meets on this Wedsnday. It’s a good time to progress, so work on it if you have time.
This Thursday, we have a General meeting at 5:30 pm in SEO 1000. At this meeting,
Dr. Eriksson will present his most recently published work, “VTrack:
Accurate, Energy-Aware Traffic Delay Estimation Using Mobile Phones'’,
presented last week at SenSys 2009 where it received the ‘best paper’ award.
He will also briefly touch upon other related projects, including
“Cabernet'’ a system for opportunistic vehicular content delivery using
open WiFi access points, and “The Pothole Patrol'’, a mobile sensor network
for online road surface quality monitoring. After the presentation,
attendees will be invited to take a look at the custom-designed hardware
used for these projects.
Definitely worth attending.

Finally, SIG-Fun Movie night will be at 6:00 pm in 2262 SEL.. We will be watching *movie yet undisclosed*, so come and share in the fun.

~Keep busy, ACM President, Sean Deitz

Week 11

November 2, 2009 — Sean Deitz (Views: 51)

SIG-Code continues rocking with Perl, meeting Monday at 5:30. We’ll be continuing on for a while longer, as it looks like there’s sufficient interest. If you’ve got any other ideas, make them known.
Flourish Planning meetings are every other Tuesday at 5:30, starting next Tuesday. To get involved our our awesome open source conference, start attending.
SIG-Game did not meet last week, and there haven’t been any submissions for the past week. Being busy is understandable, but don’t forget about us completely.
This Thursday, everyone should be at the CS Scavenger Hunt, starting around 3:30 pm, in ERF 1043. Great prizes, great food, and a good competition. Come and enjoy with the rest of us.
SIG-Fun continues their movie night every Friday with a wide arc from computing, watching Live Free or Die Hard. Stop by around 6:00 pm, and enjoy a movie and some candy.

It’s a good time to get involved, don’t miss it.

Week 10

October 26, 2009 — Sean Deitz (Views: 77)

Don’t forget, this is the last week to use an Engineering W to drop classes.

SIG-Code is getting the ball rolling on Monday with an overview of the ICPC, how it went on Saturday, and a review of problems if desired. The rest of the semester we will be covering varying topics in languages and programming, kicking it off with Perl at this meeting and next meeting, continuing on if there is enough interest.
5:30 pm, SEL 2262
SIG-Game is not meeting this Wednsday, but keep working on the game.
This Thursday, Niko Bessinas will be leading a workshop on Eclipse and Java. If you don’t know much (or anything at all) about the IDE Eclipse, you should come and we’ll help you get set up. If there’s time, we’d like experts or long time users of Eclipse to give us some details of their experiences and what they think Eclipse is good for. This is especially true for those who have used Eclipse with less standard plugins, or perhaps even just using Eclipse with C and C++ programming.
There will be cheesecake and sandwiches being served.
5:30 pm, SEO 1000.
SIG-LUG will meet as usual this Friday at 4:00 in SEL 2262, and will be discussing this Fall’s Installfest, so if you want to spread the Linux goodness or just promote your favorite distro, be there and let your input be heard.
SIG-Fun will be having movie night this Friday at 6:00 pm, to watch Colossus, The Forbin Project. Join us, it is compulsory.

Don’t forget, next Thursday, November 5th, from 3:30-6:00, the CS scavenger hunt is going on. You’re almost out of time to prepare, but you can still make it if you try!

You can follow along with the presentation materials at acm.cs.uic.edu/~sdeitz2
