We just had our ACM elections for the up and coming school year and here are the results!

President - Sean Deitz
Vice President - Mike Hutcheson
Treasurer - Bryanna Denney
Secretary - Jennifer Kinahan

The 2008-2009 school year has been an amazing one for the ACM and I would just like to say thanks to all of the previous officers for making this coming year such a tough act to follow!  Also, thanks to everyone who came out and voted!  We’re all looking forward to making the 2009-2010 school year the best one yet!

ACM Meeting this Thursday, 2/26/09

February 24, 2009 — Sean (Views: 401)

A summons from the head honcho:

Hello everybody,

Next Thursday, February 26th, at 5:30pm, Roberto Serrano will give a
presentation on developing with Android (the software platform that
powers the Google Phone).  If you’ve ever wondered how cellphone
software development works, this is the talk for you.  It should also
be an interesting rundown on what the Android platform can do and
where cellphones design is headed.

This meeting is being held in conjunction with the LUG (Android is
Linux-based), and it’s recommended for all the Linux guys out there.

There will be free food and drink, as usual.  So, come out and hang
with us. :)

Gary Turovsky
ACM President

P.S. There will be an officer’s meeting afterwards, so please attend
if you’re an elected officer or a SIG leader.

So it has been stated, so shall it be.   Attend, for the presenter is Roberto, an alumni of UIC who has much to share and is a fine fellow to boot.  You will not regret coming.  There is much to learn, and more to be earned in kinship than the hours spent belie.

~Sean Deitz, Secretary of ACM@UIC

ACM Meeting on February 12th (This Thursday)

February 9, 2009 — Sean (Views: 471)

A message from our esteemed commander-in-chief:

Hello guys,

The next ACM meeting will be Thursday (2/12) at 5:30pm in SEO 1000.

Professor Mitchell Theys will discuss GPU programming.  Inside your
computer there’s a lot more processing power than you’re using.  The
graphics card processor has advanced to the point where, for many
applications, it is far faster than your CPU.  Come to the talk and
learn how to take advantage of your GPU and learn about some of the
newest research going into programming for it.

There will be food, drink, and merriment, as usual.

Gary Turovsky
ACM President

I, Sean, have not been updating the website with the understanding that a new one was to be created, but until such a time, I shall continue to keep you posted on what’s going on.
For those of you who missed it, we had a general meeting 2 weeks ago about user interface design, and last weekend was our LAN Party, both of which were met with great merriment.  Congratulations to those of you who won prizes at the LAN Party.

Be sure to come to this week’s general meeting, as Professor Theys is a fine speaker, and the GPU is a far underutilized resource.  SIG Game will be meeting next Tuesday, and SIG Code has a meeting this Thursday, after the meeting.  If you’ve got any more ideas on modules, or perhaps you’re stuck somewhere, stop by after the meeting and we’ll talk about plans for the coming week.

Also keep in mind, this Friday, SIG Fun is putting on the movie Tron.  Join us that evening (starting time isn’t set in stone yet) for entertainment and camaraderie.

Any further issues, suggestions, comments, or challenges, come on by the ACM office, still hosted at 2262 SEL, or send an e-mail to one of the officers.

Signing off for now, hopefully a new website is up before I post again, Sean Deitz - sdeitz2 AT uic DoT edu

First ACM Meeting of the Spring 2009 Semester

January 12, 2009 — Sean (Views: 482)

We’re starting with a bang, meeting this Thursday, the first week of the semester.  It’s kind of abrupt, but hopefully you’re paying attention and got the message.  It should be fun.  And now a word from our president.

The first ACM meeting will be on Thursday, January 15th at 5:30pm in
SEO 1000.  Dr. Tanya Berger-Wolf will talk about biological
computing.  That is, the use of computer science to describe
biological systems.  This is a rather unusual point of view on
computer science, but, I believe, a revolutionary one.  It’s something
that shows the depth and breadth of application that computer science
has.  I thought this would be a little bit of an inspirational way to
start off the semester.

We’ll also use part of the time to discuss what we’ll be doing this
semester, so I strongly urge the officers and anyone who wants to be
active in the club to attend.

As usual, free pizza will be served along with fine caffeinated
beverages :)   I hope to see everyone there!
Gary Turovsky
ACM President

Remember, this Thursday.  Be there.

November 13, 2008 — Anne (Views: 425)

The next general meeting will be held on November 20, 2008 at 5:30 pm in SEO 1000.

Also, come for the fabulous prizes that will be given out during the general meeting.
