[UIC-LUG] UIC LUG Newbies' WEEK - Monday 10, 17, and 24 of September

Are you new to Linux or to UIC’s Linux Lab?

The LUG will be hosting a three week event were we are going to cover the
basics of Linux.

- Part 1: Intro to getting around the OS, directory structure,
checking your email, and various essential skills required to use Linux.
- Part 2: Programming in Linux (compiling using gcc, g++, gdb, java,
intro to makefiles, etc.)
- Part 3: Linux productivity tools (gnome, kde, open office, gimp,
inkscape, and much more.)

The event will take place Monday 10, 17, and 24 of Sept. at 5:30PM, in SEL
2262.

ACM Kickoff General Meeting

Come Join us this Thursday, September 6th at 5:30 pm for our 1st General Meeting. We will discuss all the fun events that are coming up this year as well as present one of our Special Interest Groups (SIG) the Linux User Group.

Pizza and refreshments will be available.

Afterwards come join us in the CS lounge for our evening movie along with popcorn.

ACM SigGame First Annual Meeting

Join SigGame!

SigGame (Special Interest Group for Game Development) will be meeting next Friday, high noon for our first annual meeting of the school year. Bring your bathing suits and leave your laptops behind, since we’ll getting together at the University’s pool!

I’ll be giving an introduction of what Caffeine and SSH are, then I’ll give an overview of the game engine, my envisioned architecture and plans for the feature. That being said, I’ll go over the immediate plans for the next few weeks, and assign projects to anyone who is interested. Chris may also go over the basic design for SSH. There is a LOT of work to be done, and not just coding!

I welcome anyone who is interested in joining SigGame, regardless of programming knowledge or experience. If you’ve always been interested in game programming, game design, game art or just like playing games…. come join us!

ACM LAN Party: September 8th

Come on out for the ACMs “welcome back to school” LAN Party taking place
on Saturday, September 8th!

Who: Everyone, bring all your friends!
When: Saturday, September 8th, from 1PM - ???
Where: SEL 2262 (ACM Office)
Why: To frag some newbs!

Bring your computer to frag some friends!

We will be playing a bunch of games, just to name a few, Unreal
Tournament, Counterstrike: Source, Quake 3 Arena, Quake 4, Doom 3, Call of
Duty 1 and 2, Warcraft III, Starcraft, Battlefield **42. We will also
have X-Box 360, PS2, and Wii and be playing games such as Guitar Hero and
many others! Feel free to bring your own console games.

People who pre-register will only be charged a $5 entry fee, otherwise
it’s $10 at the door. We also have a limited number of 19″ CRT monitors
in case you don’t want to lug yours around (please email
brian@acm.cs.uic.edu prior to the LAN party if you would like to reserve a
monitor).

We will be ordering pizza as the day progresses. The ACM also accepts
small donations ($.50) for pop.

So come on out, play some games, and have a great time! Any other

Flourish Conf

I just wanted to remind everyone that the Flourish Conference is coming up
this weekend. Friday, April 6th and Saturday April 7th.
If you are planning on attending be sure to mark you calendars and be sure

to get to the conference, if you have any questions or concerns please feel
free to contact me. Registration opens at 8 am, the presentations will be
begin at 10 am on both Friday and Saturday.
