From gturov2 at uic.edu Fri Mar 6 11:13:58 2009 From: gturov2 at uic.edu (Gary Turovsky) Date: Fri, 6 Mar 2009 11:13:58 -0600 Subject: [Acm-announce] Google Summer of Code Talk this Thursday (3/12) at 5:30pm in SEO 1000 Message-ID: Hey guys, For those of you who have no idea what the Google Summer of Code is, here is the official Google blurb about it: "Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is a global program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source software projects. We have worked with several open source, free software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund several projects over a three month period." So, basically, you get involved in this and they put you to work improving an open source project. It's a great way to solidify your mad programming skillz. It's also a great way to involve yourself in a real-world programming situation and learn a lot about how open source works. Probably looks great on a resume or CV, as well. We're going to have Borja Sotomayor from the University of Chicago's ACM come and talk to us about how you can get involved. I believe the application deadline is March 18th, so it's fast approaching. It will be in SEO 1000 at 5:30pm. As usual, free food will be provided :) Gary Turovsky ACM President -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As the name implies, the purpose of the event is to settle the score and prove, once and for all (or at least until next year), that we are intellectually superior to the professors. In the last one, we bested them easily, but I'm certain this time around they're really going to bring the heat. :) How it works ------------------ All the CS students get together and come up with questions. Those that wish to get in on the action, send the ACM President (me) the questions you wish to ask the professor. You get to ask your question at the event. If the question stumps the professors, we get a point. The professors will also be asking us questions, and if we don't get the right answer, they get a point. The highest point total by the end, wins. There are limits on the questions. All the questions must come from your CS classes. So, if you've ever got an absolutely horrible question on an exam and you want to revenge, here's your chance. Sadly, the question can't be the kind that takes longer than 10-15 mins to solve. Be reasonable. What we get ----------------- We win the golden stump, which currently resides in the ACM office (SEL 2262). If you want to gaze at the golden stump, feel free to stop by any time. We also win the right to be really cocky and obnoxious the rest of the semester. If we lose, no doubt the professors will never let us live it down. Also, even if we lose, we get free food. So, come join us. I think a lot of you are getting the time off from classes, so you have no excuse not to get in on this :) Gary Turovsky ACM President From gturov2 at uic.edu Wed Mar 11 14:24:06 2009 From: gturov2 at uic.edu (Gary Turovsky) Date: Wed, 11 Mar 2009 14:24:06 -0500 Subject: [Acm-announce] ACM Meeting Tomorrow (3/12) at 5:30pm Message-ID: <5FDDB856-43F4-4782-909F-F667438FBB04@uic.edu> Hey guys, Don't forget that there's a meeting to discuss Google's Summer of Code tomorrow at 5:30pm. Register here: http://www.flourishconf.com/register Flourish is an open source conference put on by the ACM, LUG and other volunteers in order to educate and encourage the use of open source. It'll take place all day April 3rd and 4th (Friday and Saturday, see schedule on website). We're going to have workshops (about Drupal, Erlang, Android, etc...) and talks by interesting folks in open source, along with a panel that will have DHH (creator of Ruby on Rails) on it. It's a great place to learn about open source and network with other people who are interested in it. We try to gear this conference towards both amateurs and professionals, so there's something for everyone here.
