Not much was missed by those who didnt show up, we just talked about some game design basics. I was using this site, http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/132341/the_13_basic_principles_of_.php?page=1 as a template for the discussion. The next step will be to break into two different groups and then start working from there. The best way to do this is that Jon and myself will give a quick blurb about what we each want to do and include our emails. From there anyone who is interested can email either Jon or myself and with what days they are free and what times (in the evening) they are free. Jon: So, next week for my group, we will be working on starting to plan out mechanics for the game in xna. Code learning will happen as well, but planning is needed. If you have any questions, or ideas you want to express ahead of time, email me at jlevy5 at uic.edu Joe: I will be using python (language) and pygame (graphics engine). I do not have a game idea but I will be focusing more on the coding and the learning of python. Also, I will be focusing on gameplay for this semester and then next semester building up project to a more full fledged game. Email me at josef.lozar at gmail.com if you are interested. Once again, the meeting times will maybe change and the two groups might not be meeting on the same days/time. If you have any questions please reply to this email or send Jon or I. A few things you need to do before the weekend of the conference: Drivers: > get the contact information of the people you are driving. You are immediately responsible for making sure they don't get left behind. > let the people you are driving know when you are leaving. You need to make sure they know when you are leaving so they can be ready on time and if they come late, then they know they maybe left behind. > save your receipts for gas. You will get reimbursed for the money you spend to get to and from UIUC (also make sure that a student's name is on the receipt). Passengers: > get the contact information of the driver. Having the phone number of the person who is driving you is important in case of emergencies and other unforseen situations. > make sure you know exactly when your ride is leaving and be there 10 minutes before departure. Everyone should be able to leave right at the scheduled time, no later (unless you have communicated to your driver that you will be late and they are fine with it). Now for the schedule for the weekend, it will be tenitive and subject to any changes: Friday: > You will depart at your scheduled times > When you reach UIUC, you will go straight to the conference. You will receive your room keys from the officers (Tom and Walter). > There is a talk scheduled for 7:45pm given by PIXAR on cinema effects for those interested. > After the talk, the rest of the night is yours to do with as you see fit. There will be an improptu LAN party, held at the hotel. Saturday: > There will be events scheduled at the conference center from 10am to 9pm, so you need to talk to your driver/fellow passengers to figure out when you want to leave for the conference and when to come back (the other officers and I expect you to attend from 11a - 5p) > After 5pm, you are free to spend the rest of the saturday as you would like. Sunday: > Everyone needs to be out of the hotel at 10am. That means everything needs to be packed into cars and people should be ready to get into said cars and driving out of the parking lot. If there is any issue with leaving at a certain time, let your driver know and work it out with them. See you all at the conference! (Next Wednesday) For those of you that don't know, Flourish! is an annual Open Source Conference held here at UIC. Flourish! will be going onto it's seventh year. It is a great conference to introduce and explore the possibilities of Free-Libre Open-Source Software(FLOSS). Interested? If so, please come to the next meeting! Come contribute to the conference, as there is MUCH to be done! We will be discussing your ideas, venue situation, crowd-funding videos critiques, a little bit about event layout, speakers, sponsorships, and perhaps a special guest from another ACM chapter. If you cannot make this meeting but would still like to help out, please contact Chase Lee(clee231 at uic.edu) to be kept informed. Alternatively you can try video conferencing with us during the meeting, although in-person is always better. It will most likely be a Google+ hangout, if needed. For directions to SELE 2260, please visit the UIC Mega Pathfinder (http://acm.cs.uic.edu/umpf). We are located on 950 S Halsted St, Chicago, IL. Why Windows Phone? Technologies change and Windows Phone is an emerging competitor but there is an opportunity to claim a place in the marketplace. Additionally I have an app in the market place and I will be able to help the most by focusing on Windows Phone. If you don't have a Windows Phone don't worry, you can still make an App and I will allow you to test on my phone. Smartphones are becoming an extension of ourselves, they provide us means of communication, scheduling, information, entertainment and more. To think of a way to take the sensors, camera, and information processing on a phone and find a useful way to help humans accomplish a task, is an effective way to demonstrate engineering for human needs. If you don't know how to program as a BIOE that's ok as long as you find yourself in a group of at least someone who can program (beginners welcome). You can still contribute by planning and prototype the screens and interactions of your group's app. Microsoft Research provides these cloud services called Project Hawaii, the website provides a good description of all the available services of how they can be used. But the most important question to be answered for you all is how these can be used for Bio Engineering uses or any other creative way. This will be a series of events held Mondays 6pm to 7pm LCC C3 every week starting Oct 22 as the first event. It will be a competition between groups and prizes from Microsoft will be awarded to winners. Someone from Microsoft will most likely visit UIC to judge app submissions. Laptops are encouraged. If you are interested I hope to see you at the first event Oct 22. I will also be speaking at BOA GBM Oct 25. Please contact Chaitra K ( chailatte3000 at gmail.com) if you are part of BOA and are interested in participating. Please contact me @ danielstack at outlook.com if you are not part of BOA (meaning ACM or neither) and you are interested in participating. Basically, ACM does not directly pay you, the money comes straight from the CS Department. You need to take your receipt(s) to the main office on the 11th floor of SEO (The specific room I think is 1120 SEO). Then you need to speak with Sherice Steward. She should give you two forms and explain how to get reimbursed. I WILL be giving her the attendees list and list of drivers. You basically should be reimbursed about 50 cents per mile, which from what I was told, it was 137 miles there and 137 miles back, which totals to $137 in your pockets. If there are any other questions please feel free to ask. One last thing, you have 60 days to do your reimbursement so please get it done ASAP. -- Tom Phillips -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... What if you could build a cool game in a single day? The team from Microsoft is partnering with UIC CS to put on a Windows 8 gaming workshop, so you can build your game (in a single day). On October 25th join Adam Hoffman & Martin Schray of Microsoft to use the GameSalad game creator tool to create a game for Windows 8. Microsoft is providing food & beverages, prizes as well as the ability to publish your app to the Windows 8 store for free. What will you need? If you have Windows 8 that would be great, but if you don't that's okay Windows 7 will work fine. Muench Sent: Wednesday, October 31, 2012 12:35 PM To: COE-UNDERGRADS at LISTSERV.UIC.EDU Subject: Deadline to drop individual courses is this Friday, November 2. This is a reminder to all Fall 2012 registered students that the last day to request a drop of one of your courses is this Friday, November 2, 2012. This is the deadline to drop individual courses and receive a "W". If you intend to drop individual courses, you must fill out a College of Engineering Petition and submit it to our main office in room 123 SEO. Students are allowed to drop up to 4 courses in this fashion. Requests to drop courses after using up your allotted 4 late drops will not be permitted. The deadline to drop ALL of your courses and WITHDRAW from the semester entirely is always the last day of instruction (Friday of 15th week which is December 7, 2012). UIC's TEN WEEK DROP POLICY To summarize, you can drop classes in weeks 1-2 through the UIC portal (my.uic.edu ). To do this, log into the UIC portal, click on the "Academics" tab, click on the "Registration" submenu tab and click on "Student Self Service Log In - Registration Menu". Once you add and/or drop courses, you should log in afterward to check if the add/drop went through. In weeks 3-10, you can drop up to four courses during your entire UIC stay by submitting a petition in the College Office (123 SEO). The course drop policy applies to all UIC courses that you have registered for. You should routinely check your academic schedule in weeks 2 and 10 to make sure that it does not contain any surprises. http://www.uic.edu/depts/oar/registration/drop_policy_undergrad.html -jim. _____________________________ James T.
