(That's Tomorrow!) For those of you that don't know, Flourish! is an annual Open Source Conference held here at UIC. Flourish! will be going onto it's seventh year. It is a great conference to introduce and explore the possibilities of Free-Libre Open-Source Software(FLOSS). If this sounds interesting, please come to the next meeting and be a part of making it a success! Come bring your ideas for the next Flourish! conference. We will be discussing your ideas, venue, possible speakers, fundraising, and events we want to do for this year. If you cannot make this meeting but would still like to help out, please contact Chase Lee( clee231 at uic.edu) to be kept informed. Alternatively you can try video conferencing with us during the meeting, although in-person is always better. For directions to SELE 2260 from any classroom on campus, please visit the UIC Mega Pathfinder (http://acm.cs.uic.edu/umpf). We are located on 950 S Halsted, Chicago, IL. If you have trouble entering the building, please call (312) 996-5947. Regards, Chase Lee -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As of August 17th, the ACM is suspended as a student organization. It looks like this will hold until December 5th, pending a payment to a company we owe money to from last year's Flourish! as well. As far as I understand the situation, we had an agreement with SAFC to pay this company through certain means, those means of payment never happened, the company sent an invoice to SAFC using old contact information from the account they previously had on their file, and SAFC were not happy about it. Pretty much we are working to pay the company out of our own pockets (SAFC refuses to pay now), which we had full intention of paying the company in the first place. By now must be asking yourself, what does this mean for me? The main thing that is changing is that we cannot participate in Student Organization hosted events, hence why we did not have a table yesterday at the Fun Fair (it's okay though, we dressed Collin in the penguin suit and sent him off to hand out fliers and OpenSUSE disks, we don't need a silly table). My main concern is how this will affect Flourish! this year, which it shouldn't, we are moving it back under LUG and they will be handling it. This won't affect your membership status with us, nor anything server related with us. We aren't losing our office and will still be holding meetings regularly. If you have any concerns feel free to stop by the office, we are working to shorten the suspension, but Campus Programs isn't being very cooperative about the situation. If there are any major updates, we will announce it. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Phillips Cc: Rigel Gjomemo; Kelly Quinn Subject: Tuition plus $20,000 scholarships for UIC CS majors Dear UIC Computer Science majors, Prof. Sloan and I have just received over $1.5 million from the National Science Foundation's Scholarships for Service program to be used for scholarships for students who are no more than 4 semesters from graduation and who wish to focus in computer security. The scholarships are extremely generous: they cover the full tuition, a bit of the fees, and in addition have a $20,000/year stipend. The "for service" part is that you are obligated to take a job with some unit of the federal, state, or some local government for 1-2 years after graduation (in computer security, paying the standard government rate). US citizenship is required. If you are interested, please apply immediately. More details: ------------------------------------------------------------ The Computer Science Department in collaboration with the IGERT in Electronic Security and Privacy (ESP-IGERT) has obtained five prestigious NSF scholarships for its undergraduate students as part of the federal Scholarship for Service program. The goal of this federal program is to train and support students in information assurance and cybersecurity and increase the number of federal professionals in this field. Students who are awarded these scholarships will receive financial support for up to two years and excellent opportunities to work for the federal government after they graduate. Benefits (renewable for a total scholarship time of up to two years, subject to satisfactory progress) - Full tuition and fees waivers - A stipend of $20'000/year - Professional development support of $3000/year to pay for travel to federal job fairs and conferences - Book Allowance of $1000/year Eligibility - US citizenship - Full-time student within two years of graduation Further requirements - Must commit to working for a federal agency after graduation for a period of time equal to the length of support after graduation (federal requirement for scholarship recipients) - Must commit to focus coursework on computing security with required courses and activities including CS 487 and CS 450 and others to be announced shortly - Must commit to go at the annual federal job fair and conference organized by the SFS program. Application Deadline (Extended): Monday September 10, 2012. URL: http://securityigert.uic.edu/news/cybercorps-scholarships-for-service-sfs-pr ogram Application procedure To apply, you must submit a letter and current (unofficial) transcript. The letter must state: - That it is an application for SFS Scholarship in Computer Security - That you are a US citizen - The number of credit hours you've completed prior to this semester - The number of full time semesters until you will graduate - The overall GPA and the GPA in Computer Science - A four semester or shorter plan of courses that leads to graduation - The name of at least one faculty reference Email the application letter and transcripts to our email at:securityigert at uic.edu For more information about the federal SFS program that awarded these scholarships to the CS Department, visit the webpageathttps://www.sfs.opm.gov/ For any further questions, don't hesitate to contact us at securityigert at uic.edu From Tom at FatesUnited.com Fri Sep 7 20:47:38 2012 From: Tom at FatesUnited.com (Tom Phillips) Date: Fri, 7 Sep 2012 20:47:38 -0500 Subject: [Acm-announce] Important Announcements/Updates - PLEASE READ Message-ID: <004f01cd8d63$ee491ca0$cadb55e0$@FatesUnited.com> Hey guys, just a bunch of information that you all should read, it is important. Also, there is a TL;DR at the end of this email for those of you who are super lazy. We need more drivers for Reflections Projections! As of right now I think we have three 100% confirmed drivers. Please, if you can drive, let Ashley know! You will be reimbursed for gas and have some extra cash to keep for yourself. Also, if you plan on attending, please let Ashley know as well. Also, on the topic of Reflections Projections, their registration is now open! The link can be found here: http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/conference/2012/registration.php Lastly. THERE IS A DEADLINE TO REGISTER WITH US. We want drivers and attendees confirmed by SEPTEMBER 21st! We only get an extra week to cancel any extra hotel rooms, if you do not communicate with Ashley (ariley4 at uic.edu) that you are willing to drive or come with us and decide to change your mind last minute, you will NOT be able to come with us. You have to register for BOTH the UIUC ACM and with us! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. In addition, a few people wanted to be librarian, that is fine, but we also need someone (or multiple people) to finish our library system. If you are interested in helping us out in that way, please contact Walter or email acm-officers at uic.edu . We also need someone to be our Engineering Council Chair. Sean has been pretty much doing it in the past, pretty much you just attend Engineering Council meetings and when it is our turn to talk, you tell them what ACM has been up to. Very simple. I also need to mention that next week, Thursday at 5:30 pm in SEO 1000. We are covering any topics that people are curious about, we will save time at the end primarily for this. The main purpose of the meeting next week is to go over our SIGs, I will mention Reflections Projections again as well as T-shirt/new ACM logo design contest (we have already gotten a few submissions so if you have something please talk to Ashley!). Talk about LUG and WiCS shall also briefly be covered. Anything else I forgot to mention will also be covered. On the topic of SIGs, ALL SIG LEADERS need to prepare something ahead of time to talk about your SIG. Powerpoint, just a speech, show of your page on the website, whatever you need to do. We are giving you approximately 5 minutes (try to make it a little bit under so you have time for questions). SIG leaders should also have meeting times prepared, we want to throw all of your regularly scheduled meetings on the ACM calendar so they are publically visible to anyone interested in attending. You should also work on your respective page on the ACM site, if you don't have access to edit anything, talk to Walter. For those of you who attended Movie Night tonight, you didn't put away the baskets you used for popcorn OR the popcorn itself. You also didn't put the table or chairs back where they were. Also, theres garbage left on the desks again. As I sit here I currently see: A subway bag, napkins, soda can, loose papers, someone's CD, and the baskets and popcorn. Being more cleanly is slowly improving but it isn't as good as it should be guys. Also, speaking of policies, the no gaming during the day has been doing EXTREMELY well, as well as offering tutoring during the day, keep that up! For anyone interested in going to that Xfinity thing to get some free grub and prizes, I will be in ACM at 6:30pm so we can head over as a student organization. (Due to those recent complications, we will head over as UIC LUG, I doubt we will WIN that $300, but you never know. I believe that is everything I needed to cover, sorry for the super long email but it all is relevant information, and I didn't want to send 15 emails. Thank you for taking the time to read this, the officers appreciate it. -Tom Phillips TL;DR - If you actually skipped all of that for this line, think to yourself this thought: "Why would Tom have written all of that if he could have easily condensed it into this simple sentence?" Now go back to the top and read the entire thing, stop being super lazy. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Monday 24th at 5pm in the CS Lounge (SEL 2260), we are having a DRIVERS MEETING. If you are able to drive, or it is a possibility you can drive, you MUST ATTEND. If for some reason you cannot, please contact Ashley and give her a heads up. We will be covering important information that you all need to hear. Secondly, Thursday 27th at 5pm in the CS Lounge we are having a FULL meeting related to Reflections. If you are a driver or are attending, you MUST show up to this as well. Here we will be discussing important things that EVERYONE needs to know. Lastly, we will be covering initial driving assignments, initial room assignments, and everything else that is along those lines. We have to cancel our extra rooms next Friday, so you have exactly ONE WEEK to figure that out. If you have specific cars you want to be with and specific people who will be in the same room, you need to email ME with this information ASAP (I would prefer by tomorrow so I can work through all of this with Ashley over the weekend). Please have your driver email me along with the people in that car CC'ed so everyone can confirm a car assignment. Likewise, if you want to share a specific room with anyone else, I need the same thing done. If you don't have 4 people but 2 or 3 and don't care who else is with you, please let me know that in your email as well. Otherwise assignments will be randomly assigned as I see fit and you have to deal with it. Also, we will not be mixing guys and girls into rooms together unless it is specifically requested with a valid reason, this is for privacy concerns and I WILL NOT override that unless you all let me know. Oh and we NEED DRIVERS. We cannot and will not compensate you if you do not take a full compliment with you. You cannot grab 1 person then drive down and expect us to give you the money for it. So if you haven't informed Ashley how many your car can hold including yourself, I would do so now (AND DON'T LIE ABOUT IT). That is pretty much everything. Any questions or concerns just email me or ask me in person. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... First, let me remind everyone that we want you to be an ACM Member if you are going with us. I have 45 people on our list that are going, a handful of whom I do not see listed as paid members on our rosters. If you haven't paid your $10 ACM Membership, get it done ASAP. Secondly, YOU MUST REGISTER AT THE UIUC WEBSITE TO ATTEND. http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/conference/2012/index.php This one is ACTUALLY REALLY IMPORTANT. We just wanted you to register with us as well so we can smoothly organize the trip. Don't sign up to go if you are not registered for the conference and just want to go UIUC to screw around, so make sure you register and go to the conference. Third, we have not assigned rooms yet, I know you are all anxious to set that up, but we need an accurate head count by THIS THURSDAY. If you are not on our list of attendees by Thursday, consider yourself S.O.L. We have to cancel our extra rooms at the hotel ON FRIDAY, I will NOT (I repeat: I WILL NOT!!!!!) be taking names on Friday. You have all had about a month to sign up. I am posting a list of attendees and driver seating on the ACM fridge so you can confirm that you are with us and with a driver. I will update it daily I suppose. Fourth, I spoke with 10 people about driving. It looks like we have enough drivers, but I MIGHT accept one more depending on what is up. Here is the current driving arrangements I have. Driver + Passengers || Capacity || Departure time 1. (FULL) Jeanine Storbeck, Kamile Sutaite, Ian Swift, Joe Lozar, Jack Petraitis. || Able to sit 0/5 more || Leaving around 12pm 2. Again, once driving assignments are done and this next weekend comes up, we will begin dealing with room registration. I suggest you start talking to others about getting a room together. A friendly reminder: 4 people per room, 2 beds per room. If you don't come to us with specific room requirements or requests, I will randomly assign you. (Please don't email me about this yet, I don't want room stuff yet, look out for another email later this weekend). If I forgot anything I'll reply to this. If you have any questions or concerns that I did not address in this email, please contact me through email or text me at (773)809-5085. Don't ask me if you are on our roster to go with us or what the conference is about, come and look tomorrow and see for yourself. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Also, for those who play Magic: The Gathering and are interested, I would like to get a draft of the new set Return to Ravnica going. Since I will have access to boxes really cheap (seriously, if I get 9 people, it's $10 per person per box), I wanted to get us together and celebrate the new set with a 4 pack draft. Collin and I would be able to supply lands if necessary.
