If you would like to volunteer, please come to the meeting tomorrow at 4PM in the CS Lounge (SELE 2260). (*Wednesday, April 3, 2013 @ 4PM*). I will be gauging the number of staff we will have and assigning what days and parts of the events you will be helping with. I will also be getting staff T-shirt sizes if you haven't registered yet. If you aren't volunteering, I hope to see you at Flourish! 2013 this year! Date: Mon, 8 Apr 2013 15:01:54 -0500 Subject: [Acm-announce] SIG-Code Project Presentation Day April 24th Message-ID: Instead of meeting weekly to talk about things, invest this time to work on projects, both independent and in class. On April 24th, at 5:00, we'll have a field day where we present a technical demo of some of the projects we've worked on this semester, both on our own and in class. Show off the things you might not ever look at again, and tell us about the trials and tribulations you had to overcome to get the code working. Technical details welcome but not required. All stories and projects welcome, and if we run out of time we can always extend it to another week. If you've got a question about the format of the presentation or whether a project would be good, send me an email or catch me on IRC. Take the time off this week on Wednesday to see a movie in SEO 1000 at 3 pm. It should be interesting. Also, we'll be having a pre-planning meeting for the programming competition for next fall, but we'll decide on a date for that after ACM elections. Keep on a lookout to the list around then for details. This is early enough that you can become a serious competitor regardless of your skills, so do give it serious thought, as it's a lot of fun and the experience will likely make you a better person. Well, programmer at least. ~Sean Deitz From mberg4 at uic.edu Tue Apr 9 15:59:08 2013 From: mberg4 at uic.edu (Michael Berg) Date: Tue, 9 Apr 2013 15:59:08 -0500 Subject: [Acm-announce] Flourish! 2013 Conference coming up this weekend Message-ID: Hi all, As you may or may not know, the annual Flourish! 2013 conference is coming up this weekend. Instead of last minute sign-up for running for a position, we are going to do this ahead of time and have it planned out. I would rather knock out our elections in as little time as possible and not take 3 hours doing so. If you are interested in running then please fill this formout. SERIOUS SUBMISSIONS ONLY. The deadline for this form will be 11:59 PM on Wednesday 4/17. I want to avoid last minute sign ups so we will be trying this for this year. ACCC is in the process of rolling out WordPress to the campus and is in need of developers to develop WordPress plugins in PHP and support users with customizing their sites with CSS. We've also got projects involving development of REST interfaces for use from JavaScript and also providing interfaces for mobile development. In addition to that, we've got opportunity for GNU/Linux sysadmins, particularly those with experience with Red Hat/CentOS/Fedora distributions. This can be an opportunity for student employment that can turn into full-time employment as a developer or GNU/Linux systems administrator with UIC ACCC. If you do go on to a full-time position you would be eligible for tuition waivers for graduate level education. So if you're wondering what comes next after graduation and you are the sort of person who likes to be able to choose your tools and have authority over your projects then ACCC may be exactly what you're looking for. If you're interested, please send me a resume off-list and please highlight your skills. Of particular interest are PHP, Perl, MySQL, Apache, Web Design, and JavaScript frameworks such as Dojo and JQuery. I'll also be hanging out at the Flourish conference tomorrow morning at 9am if you want to talk about it ^_^ Cheers, - Johnathan -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you are interested in running please fill in this form! You have until this Wednesday! (I think our plan is to post the results of this form after the form has closed). https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1jrbj3CmECPSXPp2ZYNt1dRT06Wop1U10-ewXvaWFm3g/viewform --- Additional info you may need includes preparing a speech (just a few minutes should be fine) about how you have been involved in ACM and how being elected would help benefit ACM. The general format for elections is we call up the candidates for a specific position, they give their speech, the audience will ask questions and candidates will answer. After that, the candidates step outside while the audience discusses any additional comments (good or bad) then vote. Generally elections are one of our LONGER meetings, ideally I would like to spend 2 hours MAX after Stump the Profs (30 minutes for each position). Reading the by-laws is definitely a good thing to do. Keep in mind you need to be a National ACM Member in order to be an officer (if you aren't you can still run, but if elected you MUST sign up). Also, only current ACM at UICChapter Members will be eligible to vote. There will be a check-in the day of elections and if you want to vote still we will be taking membership dues the day of as well. And just to address it, since some people seem to distrust my methods, I will not be mediating elections, Walter has volunteered to be mediator since he will not be running this year. I just got the initial form and email out the door. That being said, Walter also has access to the responses and is monitoring them. Lastly, a follow-up meeting regarding committees is likely to happen, but not this Thursday. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
