Message-ID: Hi Everyone! So, for those of you who have been coming to SIG Code, you know we're going to work on a Haskell program that will play minesweeper. WE START THURSDAY @ 4:00. First order of business is going to be getting people set up on the source control repository. So please log onto the ACM git repository ( https://acm.cs.uic.edu/git) using your ACM ID and password. Once you've done so, you can either email me your net id before the meeting, and I'll add you to the repository (this will allow you to submit your own code for the project). Second we'll go over creating a branch on your computer, where you will write the code. To do this we will install git-version control software as well as a Haskell compiler on your computer. Finally, we will look at how we're going to tackle this project function by function, and dull out functions for people to write. So if you were having any doubts about maybe skipping SIG Code this Thursday... DON'T! :-) (If we have time I'll show you how to reach the ACM SIG Code channel on ACM's IRC which should be permanently set up by then). Please try and be considerate with the space. This means not leaving your bags and coats ON chairs or tables, or leaving your laptops if you are going to be gone for extended periods of time (this means if you are going to be gone for more than 30 minutes). Also, the tables in ACM are able to sit 2 people per table, so if it gets crowded please move over and make space. Also if you walk in and people are too spread out and you want to do work, do not hesitate to ask people to move over. Lastly on this subject, don't leave any trash or food on the table when you leave. People have been really good about this so far this semester so let's keep it up everyone! If not, use the meeting time for that, otherwise you should log into one of the SIG VM's and poke around at the least. Both should need updates by now so figuring out maintenance without breaking them is this weeks task/topic. If you have any questions feel free to use the SIG mailing list, IRC, etc Sorry about the messed up schedule, Walter From iswift2 at uic.edu Tue Oct 29 17:13:53 2013 From: iswift2 at uic.edu (Ian Swift) Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2013 17:13:53 -0500 Subject: [Acm-announce] SIG CODE Message-ID: Hey guys, so as you know, we're going to be dishing out new functions this week. However, at the beginning I'd still like to do a demo of what we've accomplished so far. So if you haven't done what I requested at the end of the last meeting, please do so. Here's a review of what I asked. 1) Ensure your function works. If you haven't already tested it, do so now. 2) Add a module header to the top of your function. If your function were expand_node in ExpandNode.hs and it used no helper functions, it would look something like this. module ExpandNode(expand_node) where 3) Submit a merge request! Go the the merge requests page on the team repository, and select New Merge Request. Choose your branch name and master, and assign it to me. There is one person who seemed to have abandoned their function. I'll be finishing it myself. Remember guys, this is highly disrespectful to your team mates. Don't do this. I have them planned out on paper (which took longer than I expected), but they're not written as a list of functions yet with parameters and descriptions of how they're supposed to work. So what are we doing today? I tested your guys code. With a few small exceptions, it works! So we'll take a look at the final product, as well as introduce a key concept we'll need going forward (the variable types Maybe and Just). Functions will definitely be ready by next week. Today's meeting might be short, but it'll be a good one. If you're not actively involved in the project, but would like to see what we've accomplished so far, feel free to stop by.
