Campus 1871 is a weekend-long event hosted by startup incubator, 1871, that brings students from each of their university partners (University of Illinois, IIT, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and Loyola) to build teams, and develop and pitch real startup companies from scratch at 1871. In addition to working in small groups, Campus 1871 will also bring in seasoned entrepreneurs to mentor and speak on panels throughout the weekend. This year?s event will take place over the weekend of *April 10-12th* at 1871. Interested students must go through the application process? *th**e link the the Campus 1871 application form is **here . The admissions deadline is **Friday April 3rd**.* The event is free for students and those selected will be supplied with transportation, meals, and a hotel room for the weekend. 1871 is looking for three types of students to participate: Hacker (i.e. engineer), Hipster (i.e. designer), and Hustler (i.e. business/marketing). The emphasis of programming will most likely be on digital tech given that 1871 and most of its companies are in that space. Please feel free to share this opportunity with your entrepreneurial-minded students and invite them to apply. Last year's winning teams won student memberships to 1871. For more information about Campus 1871, you can find a summary blog Joey did about the event last year here: http://www.builtinchicago.org/blog/campus1871-bright-students-innovative-ideas . So as you may or may not know, Ludum Dare, a game jam/competition where you're tasked to create a video game in 48 hours, is coming soon. The next one will be from April 17th to April 19th. Just like last year, this year we're going to host Ludum Dare right here at UIC. It will take place in the CS lounge/ACM area (SEL 2260) and will approximately last for 48 hours. Keith and I (Sunil) will be hosting it, so please try to come if you're interested. Here is some more information from the Facebook event created by Keith ( https://www.facebook.com/events/1560342244246179/ ): ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's that time of the year again: Ludum Dare. LD is a Game Development jam and competition What: Ludum Dare is a Game Development "jam" and competition. It is an online event but since it's lonely working alone and difficult to find others to work with, we created this event so everybody can get together and make teams to create something cool! When: Starts at 8 PM on Friday the 17th and goes until Sunday night, although the website allows you to submit up until 8 PM on Monday. Who can come: Anybody! Even if you've never made a game, anybody can contribute. There are some really simple game engines out there like GameMaker or Scratch which make it possible for anybody to design games. What you'll need: Bring any tools you need for your craft; laptops for programmers, instruments for musicians, drawing tablets for artists, etc. Teams: At 8 o'clock we will get everybody together and vote on two ways to make teams: A) Form your own, walk around and find programmers if you're an artist and vice versa. B) Tell us what your skills are and we will form balanced teams. Reduces the whole awkward human interaction thing. As you all know, the CS department will be renovating the CS area this coming summer, including the ACM office and IT lab. That said, as we're nearing the end of the semester, the ACM will begin the clearing-out process this week. ACM operations should continue as normal during this time, but please note: - We will begin going through books, magazines, and computer/electrical equipment, discarding what we don't need. If there is anything anyone needs around for the end of the semester (cables, text books, etc.), please let the officers know. - Please return all library books as soon as possible. If you need them for finals week, please let the officers know so we can keep inventory. - All major furniture in the office is expected to stay until Saturday, May 9th (this includes the printer, refrigerator, and computers). - At this time, all servers - ACM, CS, and LUG - are expected to be available as normal until Saturday, May 9th. More details on server downtime to come closer to finals week. - There will probably NOT be an end-of-the-year LAN party, however, we are hoping to organize some sort of mini-end-of-the-year shindig. Details TBA. - We will probably need volunteers to help move stuff on Saturday, May 9th. If interested, please let us know. We will do our best to keep everyone posted as things progress. Also, if anyone has any thoughts on things they would like to keep or discard, new furniture or items they would like to see, or anything else regarding our new space for next year, feel free to let us know! We'd really appreciate your input! Any comments, questions, or concerns can be brought up via this e-mail chain, any of the officers personally, or to management at acm.cs.uic.edu. Thank you, Allison Channic ACM Vice-President -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
