This is just a reminder that SIGSysAdmin will still be meeting today *November
2, 2016 @ 5:30PM* in the ACM/LUG Office (SELE 2264).

We'll be talking about useful tools that you may encounter when completing
SysAdmin tasks on the command line.  Also, I want to make sure that those
of you who want to keep receiving SIGSysAdmin announcements are subscribed
to the SIGSysAdmin mailing list.  There, you'll receive additional meeting
notes, discussion opportunities, and notifications from automated
systems/projects.  To subscribe, just send an email to
sigsysadmin-subscribe at acm.cs.uic.edu. The contents of the email doesn't
matter.

As always, if you need help with a task/project for SIGSysAdmin, please

Come out to ACM's second LAN party of the semester! The LAN party will be
this *Saturday, November 12th* in the Computer Science Lounge (SELE 2268)

*What's a LAN party?*
A get together for students who are interested in playing board games, card
games, and video games on console or PC (:

by someone who is UIC affiliated.

*What should I bring?*
Your gaming machine(s), consoles, card games, board games, controllers, and
any games that you would like to play!

Also, we would like to have systems such as PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One,
and Wii U (Smash and Mario Kart are a plus, hint hint wink wink)

??Hey guys!

just another reminder that SIG Compete will be having their DAILY meetings
this week.
Since we only have school on Monday - Wednesday this week, I will lead
Monday, Guillermo will lead Tuesday, and Edmond will lead Wednesday.

For my meeting, I will be going over some techniques of how to approach
codefights' 3 main categories: Debugging, Recovery, and Code writing.  We
will also do some 1-on-1's to practice our skills against each other.

Guillermo and Edmond will be sending emails through me the day before they
lead, so look out for those as well!

As a side note, I sent out an email on Friday about Codefights
<https://codefights.com/signup/cv3Abjej4PXsrFSp9/main>.  They have
leaderboards weekly and overall.  Our University's last week's placement
was 6th and that was when most people started on Friday!  Use the link
above to join and to get our school top placed.
Companies do see them and they can recruit you directly through that.  I
have gotten a request to join Codefight's team, albeit it is probably
mailed to anyone who beat their bot, but not only is it a good way network
and place internationally, but also great practice!

For those of you who are not familiar with Flourish! Flourish! is a
student-led conference hosted at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
This year will mark the conference's tenth year. We are proud to help
promote the use of open source and provide a gathering place for open
source enthusiasts in the Chicagoland area. The Flourish! conference is
FREE to attend and there will be free T-Shirts to those who register before
March 12th. We really appreciate everyone for coming to Flourish!
Conference for the past several years and we hope to bring another great
and educating year!

On top of the conference, we will be holding a coding challenge that is
also being led by UIC students.

There will be a Flourish! meeting on 11/24/16 at 5 PM in the ACM/LUG
office. We have finalized our room reservations and we will be giving out
Flourish! e-mails to those that want to help. Remember, no experience is
needed and everyone is welcome to contribute! Let's work together to create

?Just another reminder: Guillermo will be leading.

On Tuesday we will be doing ... coding problems on the whiteboard!  We will
be doing problems either individually or in groups, depending on how many
people are in attendance.

Why whiteboarding exercises?
- It is probably the least "natural" way to code, we spend hours coding on
our laptops for our CS assignments, yet all of the "top" companies (Google,
Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, hot startups, companies that want to be hot
startups) conduct interviews on the whiteboard.
- The best way to prepare is to practice ... in front of others ... on a
whiteboard!
- We are in the midst of recruiting season for internships and full-time
positions.  Many of you might have interviews coming up.  Bring your
toughest preparation questions!
- Maybe you're a freshman or a sophomore and are intimidated by the
prospect of whiteboarding for your life at a job interview.  Come and see
that even mortals can do it!  We will give you beginner questions involving
introductory data structures and primitives (arrays, grids, Strings, ints).
- It is a flexible format, and I strive to create a collaborative and
collegial environment.  If you just want a refresher and are new to white
boarding exercises, we will not be jerks.  If you want to be grilled and
asked the toughest questions on Cracking the Coding Interview until you
cry... we can do that too!

Let's improve our coding and whiteboard skills together!

On Wednesday we will be going over coding problems together!

There will be 6 problems, 2 for each difficulty (Beginner, Intermediate,
Expert).
First, individually, we will attempt to solve the problems from a chosen
difficulty. Then we will divide into groups by difficulty and improve on
each solution. Each group will discuss the different approaches and what
merits each one gives. Then in the final 30 minutes we will all go over the
solutions together and compare those with what each group came up with.

Hello All,

Based on the poll sent out yesterday, it seems that the majority(5 to 1)
would still like to meet. So let's do this! :-)  SIGSysAdmin will be
meeting today *Wednesday, November 23, 2016 @ 5:30PM* in the ACM/LUG Office
(SELE 2264).

I plan to talk about Active Directory today.  The directory service
developed by Microsoft originally for the purpose of domain management.

If you have any questions with a task/project for SIGSysAdmin, please feel
free to bring it up on the listserv or at the meeting.

upcoming Spring semester Applied CS with Android! Applied CS with Android
is a technical enrichment program designed for Junior and Seniors that
enhances concepts from CS curricular work with the support of facilitators

Structures and Algorithms and uses Android as a development platform for

Hello All,

This is a reminder that SIGSysAdmin will be meeting today *Wednesday,
November 30, 2016 @ 5:30PM* in the ACM/LUG Office (SELE 2264).

Today will be the last meeting of the semester so I won't be talking about
any specific topic, but instead I want to get an idea of any projects that
people want to be doing over the winter break. I will be available during
most of the break, so we'll definitely be able to meet up if you need
guidance.

If you need to get started on a project, check out the SIGSysAdmin project
list on the wiki (https://acm.cs.uic.edu/wiki/sig:sysadmin) or ask me about
specifics.

Some things that I personally want to look into over the break include:

   - CoreOS networking
   - Pfsense
   - New workstation provisioning
   - IT Management Automation/Orchestration (Ansible?Chef?Others?)
   - Monitoring via SNMP/monitoring-plugins/Icinga
   - Monitor Wall maintenance & other software solutions

Do you have anything you want to look into? Bring your ideas to the meeting!
