Many of you know have heard about SIG Compete this semester. To kick things off, I am going to have the first meeting be next week due to an unexpected event happening in my schedule this week. I have not heard from too many people about time being a factor, but I will take a poll to see what works best for everyone! If you are interested, please fill *THIS* form out. Before we get things started, ICPC team registration deadline is this Friday. Please email Sean Deitz (sdeitz2 at uic.edu) that you are interested in joining. To start things off with the SIG, if you are interested in coming to the SIG, please make accounts for HackerRank as well as CodeWars. We will be starting with a little introduction into it and then actually doing some competitions internally within the SIG (Prizes *may* be awarded). Any question? Message-ID: Hello everyone! I hope you are having a great start to the new semester! ACM will be hosting it's first company tech talk next week on *Thursday, September 15th *at 5:30pm in the Computer Science Lounge (SEL-E 2268). This is a great opportunity for you to learn about how the CME Group improves the run times of their applications. *Abstract: * *Counting Cycles instead of seconds*When your customers care about the time on the scale of nanoseconds, it?s not good enough to write code that just works. It has to be fast! The first step in being fast is a deceptively difficult question to answer: How long does it take my application to do all the things it does? Once you know the answer to that question, you can prioritize work and work on making slow parts faster, measure the improvements you make, and track the regressions new features might cause. But, as soon as you start to measure at scales less than a millisecond, strange things start to happen. The make and model of your processor can determine how accurate time is actually tracked. And, when every nanosecond counts, the cost of getting the time and persisting it somewhere can be longer than what you are trying to measure if you?re not careful. During this talk we will discuss how we solved some of these problems to provide a faster and more consistent exchange for our customer, some of the challenges we faced, and some of the benefits of having fine grained performance metrics. We hope to see you there! Jackie Tapia Vice President of the ACM, University of Illinois at Chicago Chapter -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It helps keep tasks organized and keeps everyone informed. - Make sure you sign in at the meeting! Also remember to write down your ACM account names as well on the sign-in sheet. I'll be adding those who came to both meetings to gain access to things like an open server for you to do some experimenting on. :-) - Is there a specific project you are interested in? Let us know at the meeting, and we'll direct you to how to get started! - Bring your suggestions on topics you would like to see covered in a future meeting. We're always open to suggestions. These first few meeting will be mostly introductions, but we'll be diving deeper into the sysadmin world soon! :-) If you have any questions, please feel free to bring those questions to the meeting or post them on the SIGSysAdmin listserv. We will begin work on the two standing project proposals: analysis of a complex dynamical system (via R, deSolve , and ggplot2 ), and basic semantic awareness (via Prolog, its http library, and ConceptNet). We're aiming for a basic acquaintance with R (e.g. via the reference card & mailing list archives) and Prolog (e.g. via Learn Prolog Now! and the SWI-Prolog library reference). Web interfaces exist for R and Prolog . In lieu of specific references, here is light food for thought on what Prolog does (logic variables), does with libraries (constraint programming), and doesn't (I/O).
